Mallory Frye Design

Mallory Frye uses human centered design to create positive change.

Background
In 2015, Graphic Design diploma in hand, Mallory ventured into the world of big tech, designing enterprise level experiences for large corporate clients. While she learned valuable skills in end to end product design and designing at scale, Mallory found it increasingly harder to focus on business problems when there were so many real human problems out there that needed attention. She decided in 2021 to shift focus to social impact design work.

Noteworthy projects

JustFix
Tenant action tools

I’ve worked with JustFix on a number of projects:

  • Los Angeles’ Letter of Complaint tool, in which tenants can send a letter to their landlord requesting repairs in their home. The tool is legally vetted, free of charge and compliments SAJE’s biweekly Tenant Action Clinics.
  • Contributing a navigation pattern for JustFix’s suite of products
  • Auditing the existing Rent History Request tool to plan for future application of the new design system

Mater Hospital

Nursing Department

As a part of the Transformation Office, I collaborated with the Nursing Department in the Mater Hospital to improve the way nurses document and share information during a patient’s stay in hospital.

Utilizing principles of usability design, we co-created a simplified document that is quicker to fill in and easier to understand during nurse handover. My team and I collaborated with departments across the hospital to ensure this one form worked for any patient pathway.

The tool went into pilot in December 2024 and will be used for every patient entering the hospital—400,000 on average a year.

staclabs
Design system + product strategy

I’ve worked with staclabs on a number of projects as member of Trestle Collaborative:

  • I helped the team create a 5 year plan for their admin user’s experience—from a manual process to self service. I interviewed customers, led a series of workshops with the organization’s leadership, tested concepts, and created a blueprint of iterative design work for future releases.
  • I created a design system for staclabs based on Google Material. I applied the new design to their primary product, Demlaunch, in which people running for office can request tools for their campaign.
  • I mentored the Product Director in areas of design, so they could make more user-centered decisions, without having a designer on the payroll.

Mater Hospital
Dermatology Department

As part of the Transformation Office, I led the team in creating the hospital’s first patient facing app, Derma Diary. The app is available across Ireland, and helps people with chronic skin conditions get to know their skin through daily check-ins. They can bring their app to appointments and have more concrete discussions with healthcare providers.

This project originated from Dehlia McCarthy‘s NCAD master’s thesis, and was developed by Jimmy Loughran.

The app will undergo a pilot in Q1 2025, with full availability to Apple and Android users in Ireland in Q2 2025.

Dublin Food Co-op
Volunteer experience

Dublin Food Co-op is a local community grocery store, focused on bringing affordable, healthy, organic food to Dublin. One way to make this food affordable is to rely as much as possible on the co-op membership as volunteers. After the pandemic, the number of volunteers had dropped.

I completed a research project to understand what wasn’t working well with the existing volunteer experience, and recommend ways to better recruit and maintain incoming volunteers.
